some might say that truenas is actually my favorite linux-based nas. unfortunately, i dont have a network capable to test it out, as i gave a friend the disks i had left over from a previous project. if you dont have any network capability at all, unraid is the way to go (and is free if you want the basic version). some of the top features are its open source nature, its adaptive storage pool (asp) technology, and its ability to work with iscsi. personally, i had issues when i used truenas and iscsi at the same time. the two didnt quite mesh. however, unraid doesnt need to use iscsi, and it does a fantastic job even without it. this is a game-changer for anyone who has ever used unraid, because, in my experience, iscsi technology is not very well suited for use with nas devices. asp was a big problem in the past for unraid. while the interface to asp seems pretty easy to use, the logic behind it was really flawed, and cause a lot of headaches for newer users. asp is great for general storage pooling, but it can mess up data when the pooling is done improperly, or when the underlying physical devices dont match the assumed pooling requirements. unraid has since adopted a newer, more scalable method of asp that is dead-simple to use, and fixes a lot of the problems of the past. i would highly recommend that you take a read through the unraid documentation, as it covers many of the pitfalls of the older methods of asp. another great feature unraid has is its api, which is awesome for a lot of different use cases, such as the ability to automate backups, check file access/expire times, etc.
